Free entry to History Museum on 9 and 10 February

On these days, visitors will get a discount on general and themed tours: they will cost 100 roubles per participant. The special event is held to celebrate the museum’s 146th anniversary on 9 February.

 

In February, the State History Museum celebrates its birthday by offering  free admission on 9 February to the entire museum complex, including St Basil’s Cathedral and the Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812; and on 10 February, free entry to the permanent exhibition and other displays in the main building on Red Square. Entry to the museum is free of charge, and there are unprecedented discounts for guided tours, at a cost of only 100 roubles per person. Visitors can get free tickets at the museum’s ticket offices.

“On 9 February, the History Museum marks its 146th anniversary. Besides free entry, we have prepared a special programme with various workshops, concerts, a screening and a performance for children. During these days, there will be special discounts for our guided tours. The highlight tour will only cost 100 roubles,” said a spokesperson at the museum press service.

The usual price of a group tour is 3,000 roubles or more. The standard price of a ticket for entry (without discounts) is 400 roubles.

Museum-goers can enjoy “The Treasures of Prague Castle” exhibition in the main building of the State History Museum (1 Red Square). At this show, visitors will see treasures and everyday objects that once belonged to the royal families: porcelain, furniture, gold and silver treasure boxes and the regalia of kings, brought from the Czech Republic for the first time. The museum’s exhibition complex (2/3 Revolyutsii Square) hosts “The Energy of a Dream” exhibition to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Great Russian Revolution. Many objects are displayed for the first time, including such curiosities as the field uniform of Nicholas II, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna’s prayer book, Vladimir Lenin’s greatcoat and other items never before shown to visitors. The Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812 displays personal belongings of Napoleon Bonaparte and Emperor Alexander I as well as a portrait gallery of war heroes.

About 30 highlight and themed tours will be held on 9 and 10 February. One guided tour will last 45 minutes. The tours will be held all day long, from 11 am to 5 pm. The schedule is available on the museum’s official website.

Workshops on historical calligraphy will be another free bonus. They will be held in sessions at halls 16 and 20 of the museum’s main exhibition area between 9–11 February and will be open to all visitors. There will also be history quizzes for children and adults, held from 4 pm to 8 pm in Seni (the main hall). On 9 February, the special programme will conclude with a classical music concert, starting in the main hall at 7 pm.

The History Museum is the largest museum in Russia and one of the biggest in the world. It includes St Basil’s Cathedral and the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, the Romanov Chambers on Varvarka Street, the Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812, the exhibition complex on Revolyutsii Square and the complex of restoration studios in Izmailovo. The collection of the Historyl Museum includes more than five million objects and 14 million sheets of documents. It has over 1.5 million visitors every year.
