Five ice slabs for light sketching have been installed in Sokolniki Park. Unusual square ‘canvasses’ can be found within short distance from the main entrance. Normal paintbrushes have been replaced with UV wands. The ice canvasses were made to resemble vintage television sets, each two metres square weighing over 500 kg. To create the slabs, water was frozen in special moulds using freezer chambers.
“A shield covered with fluorescent dye is attached to the inside of each of the ice sculptures. The shield will absorb UV rays and ‘remember’ the movements of the painter. The ice paintings will illuminate and glisten with colours for at least 15 minutes, as if on a television screen,” Sokolniki Park Artistic Director Andrei Koposov commented.
Television-shaped ice canvasses will remain in the park until 14 January. On 11 and 12 January, light painters will perform for people visiting the park. Using UV wands, they will create a holiday-themed light show based on children’s fairytales. There will also be daily light painting workshops available starting at 4 pm and 7 pm. On 13 and 14 January the canvasses will be open for the public to paint.
More ice sculptures will be on display in Victory Park on Poklonnaya Hill. More than 40 ice creations symbolising the countries participating in the 2018 FIFA World Cup were built for the Ice Moscow: In the Family Circle annual festival, including a small copy of Big Ben, a miniature Panama Canal plus the Eiffel Tower.
