The Moscow Committee for Architecture and Urban Development has approved the design of an ice palace in Solntsevo. The over 6,000 square metre building will be built near the Aviatorov and Yuliana Semenova intersection. Construction is expected to begin this year.
Chief Architect of Moscow Sergei Kuznetsov said that the two-story building would have a futuristic look, with the facade dominated by white, grey and metallic colours, and using 3D facade technology to imitate a sea wave.
Draft engineering solution
The wave will be made of many metal bars of different shapes and size that will create the illusion of a 3D space. The sea wave will cover the second and partially the first floor of the building, among other things, protecting the ice palace from direct sunlight.
On the first floor, facades will be covered with perforated panels with 3.5-metre high images of hockey players. In the evening, the futuristic facade and hockey player figures will be illuminated.
“Once completed, the ice arena will host hockey games, as well as serve as a recreation centre, where families can skate,” Kuznetsov said.
The main ice arena, 56 metres long and 26 metres wide, will be located on the first level alongside a 30 metre by 15 metre warm-up rink. The second level will feature a hockey school, a café and bleachers for 250 spectators opening on both the big arena and the warm-up rink. The project also provides for the creation of a car park with 38 spaces.
As an aside, the sun-screening metal bars will also be used at the ice palace at the Luzhniki Sport Complex. The new venue will be built by 2019 on the same site where the old hockey arena once stood. It will feature an ice rink, workout gyms, a swimming pool and a spa-centre. Apart from the metal bars, the facade will also include crystals.
