Shliuzy ("shipping locks" in Russian) is a workmen's settlement on a small island. Initially, workers of the Moscow Canal lived there working at Perervinskye shipping locks (along Kolomenskaya Embankment).
The main part of this post is about the ships standing there. The atmosphere of the island is very nice and unusual.
I've been living opposite this island since my childhood enjoying its view from my windows. As I understood from some conversations with local people, workmen of a hydropower station live there now. The object is under controlled access, but it didn't stop me from sledging there in winter in my childhood. Though, if you meet a workmen in a strange uniform, he will ask you to leave the place as soon as possible.
