Exhibition: The Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo and the Romanovs

The exhibition showcases authentic household items and pieces of the palace interior connected with Russian emperors Alexander I, Alexander III, Nicholas I and Nicholas II: a unique collection of objects that surrounded several generations of the Romanov imperial family, who lived in the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo.

On display are more than 700 items offering a glimpse into the life of the Romanovs and eras past: paintings by European and Russian artists, 18th and 19th century porcelain, palace furniture, the military uniforms of the emperors, as well as letters, diaries, drawings, watercolours, copybooks, notes and photographs.

The Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo was a wedding gift from Catherine II to her adorable first grandson, Crown Prince Alexander (future Emperor Alexander I) and Princess Yelizaveta Alexeyevna for their marriage. In May 1796, the couple moved to the palace and for years after it was linked with the Romanovs. Emperor Nicholas I loved it. Crown Prince and future emperor Alexander III used it as his residence.  Emperor Nicholas II was born there in 1868. The Alexander Palace was Nicholas II’s residence during the last 12 years of his rule until 1917 when, after several months under house arrest, the imperial family was sent into exile.

The second part of the exhibition will open in late 2016 and will deal with the final months of the Romanovs in the Alexander Palace.
